Shipping Containers in World Cup 2022

On November 20th, 2022, Qatar will host the first match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and welcome fans with village cabins in Stadium 974. Located in the portside of Doha, Stadium 974 allows fans to enjoy the breeze from the Arabian Gulf. Stadium 974 as suggested by its name is built from 974 shipping containers. Uniquely, Qatar chose to use 974 steel boxes because the number represents the Country’s international dialing code.

However, the basic reasons for repurposing steel boxes are once the tournament finishes, the container cabins can easily be disassembled and repurposed into other functional applications. It shows Qatar’s eco-sensitivity and a new innovation out of shipping containers.

The organizers of the World Cup Event have put their best efforts to make the accommodation units comfortable to stay in. The containerized cabins will provide fans with proper accommodation units during the tournaments. The rows of containerized cabins are set up on artificial green grass.

For the interior design, the container cabins have two single beds or a double bed, a mini-fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, toilets, chairs, and a table. The fans who choose to stay at these portable containerized cabins will enjoy some amenities such as two-time-a-week housekeeping, two bottles of water, bed linen, bathroom towels, and WiFi connection.

Outside the containerized cabins, fans can enjoy on-site facilities such as food outlets offering a wide range of dishes, snacks, and beverages. Furthermore, fans can watch the games on a big screen while lying on comfortable couches so that they can mingle with other soccer lovers.

Stadium 974 will promote the idea of using modular containers and eco-sensitivity. As Boardroom reports that Omar Al-Jaber, the executive director of accommodations for the Supreme Committee of Delivery and Legacy (SC), explains that these containerized cabins will be given to countries in need of completely recycled container units after the 2022 FIFA World Cup is finished.
